More madness has hit the headlines today, this time concerning the ever unfavoured London 2012 Olympic Games – Games that we all know will be remembered for all the wrong reasons!
An spiralling sculpture is to be built in East London that is a cross between a viewing platform and a roller-coaster ride, without the fun of travelling at 100mph. The monument, to mark 2012, has been designed by award winning artist Anish Kapoor and “leading structural designer” Cecil Balmond – it is all a pile of cogs!
Masterly, it encorporates the five Olympic rings and will offer visitors a panoramic view of London, and it is even 22m taller than New York’s Statue of Liberty. Gee wizz!!
It will cost some £19.1m but we should not worry about our own purses being pulled as billionaire steel magnate Lakshmi Mittal has coughed up £16m for the project. It is odd that he is doing this as the sculpture itself resembles something of a catastrophe of a fallen crane.
London Mayor Boris Johnson stated that “some may call it the Hubble Bubble” – others, like me, will call it crap and a waste of money. Boris is also stated as saying that it would “become the perfect iconic cultural legacy” which looking like the remnants of a major crash I can only agree with!
